Rosemary Extract and Memory: Findings from Human Studies

Controlled human studies suggest that rosemary preparations can produce small, short-term changes in selected memory, attention, alertness, or processing-speed measures. However, the evidence is limited, heterogeneous, and insufficient to establish a reliable or lasting cognitive benefit.

What human research has actually tested

Human research on rosemary and cognition has not studied one standardized intervention. Trials have used dried leaf powder, a commercial rosemary water containing extract and hydrolat, hot-water rosemary extract, or rosemary essential-oil aroma. These preparations differ in chemical composition and route of exposure, so findings from one should not automatically be generalized to another.

The outcomes have also varied. Researchers have measured computerized memory scores, working memory, attention, reaction time, psychomotor speed, mood, fatigue, and short-term alertness. Most studies tested healthy adults rather than people with diagnosed cognitive disorders, and most assessed acute or short-term effects rather than durable changes.

A 2021 systematic review characterized the rosemary evidence as coming from small studies with mixed results. [5] The central question is therefore not whether rosemary is broadly a memory enhancer, but whether particular preparations produce reproducible changes on particular laboratory tasks in particular populations.

The older-adult crossover trial

The most informative oral study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, repeated-measures crossover trial involving 28 healthy older adults with a mean age of about 75 years. Each participant completed five separate test sessions, receiving placebo and four different amounts of dried rosemary leaf powder in counterbalanced order, with a one-week washout between visits. Cognitive testing occurred repeatedly over six hours after each session. [1]

The clearest result was a non-linear finding in a measure called speed of memory. The lowest tested amount, 750 mg, performed better than placebo on that outcome, while the highest tested amount, 6,000 mg, performed worse. Other cognitive measures showed less consistent and sometimes adverse changes compared with baseline.

This design has useful strengths: randomization, blinding, within-person comparisons, repeated testing, and a placebo condition. Its limitations are equally important. It was a small, single-day-per-condition study in healthy older adults, and its dose-response pattern was not a consistent improvement across memory, attention, and working-memory outcomes. The tested quantities describe an experiment, not instructions for use.

Rosemary water in healthy adults

A separate randomized controlled trial assigned 80 healthy adults to consume either 250 mL of a commercial rosemary water or plain mineral water. Participants then completed computerized cognitive tasks, subjective alertness and fatigue ratings, and near-infrared spectroscopy measurements during testing. [2]

The researchers reported several statistically significant but small beneficial effects on cognition in the rosemary-water group. The study also found higher deoxygenated hemoglobin during cognitive task performance, which the authors interpreted as a possible change in oxygen extraction during mental demand. That physiological signal is interesting, but it is not itself proof of better everyday memory or attention.

The trial supports the possibility of an acute effect from one specific rosemary beverage formulation in healthy adults. It does not establish that ordinary culinary rosemary, a concentrated supplement capsule, an essential oil, or another extract will produce the same result. The short follow-up also leaves persistence, repeatability, and practical importance unresolved.

The four-week extract study in Japanese men

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined a hot-water rosemary extract product over four weeks in healthy working-age Japanese men. A later publication reported a post-hoc analysis limited to participants whose baseline total-mood-disturbance scores were above the median. In that subgroup, 8 men were analyzed in the rosemary group and 13 in the control group. [3]

The post-hoc analysis found improvements in several mood-related measures and in psychomotor speed within the rosemary group. However, the published cognitive results do not show a clear between-group improvement in composite, verbal, or visual memory. The study was small, short, restricted to men from one population, and the subgroup was selected after the original trial had been conducted.

These features make the findings hypothesis-generating rather than definitive. The study also included investigators affiliated with the food company associated with the test product. That does not invalidate the results, but independent replication would make the evidence more persuasive. The trial provides limited evidence about one extract formulation, not a general conclusion about rosemary and memory.

Some frequently cited rosemary research used aroma rather than oral ingestion. In a randomized study of 144 healthy adults, participants were assigned to rosemary aroma, lavender aroma, or an odorless control while completing a computerized cognitive battery. Rosemary was associated with better scores on overall memory quality and secondary memory factors, but also with slower memory speed compared with controls. [4]

Because the intervention was an ambient essential-oil odor, the results cannot be treated as evidence for an ingested rosemary extract. Smell can influence alertness, mood, expectancy, and the context in which information is encoded or retrieved. A separate experiment also examined rosemary as an environmental context for memory and found that effects could depend on whether the odor was present during both learning and testing.

Aroma studies are relevant to the broader question of how rosemary-related compounds or sensory cues may affect cognition, but they answer a different question from supplement trials. Combining them with oral studies as though they were interchangeable would overstate the evidence.

How strong is the evidence, and what remains uncertain?

Taken together, the human evidence is best described as preliminary. Controlled studies have reported small or outcome-specific effects, but results differ by preparation, route, age group, outcome measure, and timing. The strongest positive signals are acute laboratory findings, while the short extract study provides no convincing evidence of improved memory between groups.

Important uncertainties include:

  • Whether any observed effects are large enough to matter outside computerized testing.
  • Whether findings can be reproduced by independent research teams.
  • Which rosemary constituents, if any, are responsible for the effects.
  • Whether standardized extracts behave like dried leaf powder, rosemary water, or aroma.
  • Whether effects persist beyond several hours or a few weeks.
  • Whether results differ in women, younger adults, people with cognitive impairment, or people taking medicines.
  • Whether repeated testing, mood changes, expectancy, or selective subgroup analysis influenced the results.

The evidence does not establish that rosemary extract prevents cognitive decline, reverses memory problems, or treats any medical condition. A fair conclusion is narrower: some controlled human experiments have detected modest, short-term changes in selected cognitive measures, but a dependable, clinically meaningful memory or attention benefit remains unproven.
